Counseling for Children

A parent’s wish for their child is for them to be happy, to feel loved, and to thrive. However, mental health struggles do not have age restrictions. Counseling can be an integral part of helping your child thrive in a world that is full of challenges and changes. Children can greatly benefit from having a safe and welcoming space to learn about their emotions, to gain emotional regulation skills, and to enhance their coping strategies for stressors. By giving your child access to these resources in counseling, your child will be better equipped to launch into their adult lives.

It is easy to forget how difficult it is to be a child. Children are navigating their big emotions and their experiences while relying on the guidance of the attachment figures in their lives. As parents, it is challenging to watch your child struggle, and it can be hard to decide if it is appropriate for your child to begin counseling. Counseling is not just for those who are experiencing “major problems.”

Your child may benefit from counseling if they are having difficulties with:

  • Anger
  • Behavioral issues
  • Self-esteem
  • Stress
  • Anxiety (e.g. social anxiety or separation anxiety)
  • Impulsivity
  • Relationship with siblings and family
  • Bullying, Grief, Depression
  • Inattention or hyperactivity
  • Family transitions (e.g. blended families, divorce, fostering)
  • Trauma
  • OCD, Trichotillomania
  • Psychological and Behavioral Assessments and Testing

At Doxa, we have licensed professionals who use evidence-based practices to help your child learn about their emotions, to develop coping strategies for stressors, and to have a safe and consistent space to process their emotions and experiences.
